In recent years, the trade fair Alimentaria Barcelona has achieved international recognition. For this reason, during the week it is perfectly normal to co-incide in Barcelona with global gurus, international businesspeople and agri-food innovation professionals.
With all this, we can say without fear that Barcelona is, during this week, the global focus for the gastronomic and agrifood sectors. Also it’s worth noting that this sector is, for the Spanish economy, the second most important motor, behind tourism and ahead of industry. This duality gives the trade fair an added value difficult to quantify.The agri-food sector is emerging from the human need to interact around a table. Yes, I said need! It arises from ancestral roots and is intrinsic to human culture: from the more than 6000 years old settlement in Orkney – Skara Brae, in northern Scotland, the provision of the Roman domus tricliniums or Japanese tea ceremony, to business meetings which are held every day throughout the world around a table. The moment of eating together is a key moment for social, group and economic relations.
This last aspect has been theorized about endlessly and thus we know that that Latino businessmen close their agreements around the table, Orientals sit around a table only when the deal is closed and Central Europeans integrate breakfast, not lunch, into meetings that run to a strict agenda.
So, that Barcelona has a chance to become a global agricultural power, as well as gastronomy, says a lot about us. I encourage all employers to value the cultural asset which is food as an engine of interrelation and good understanding.
